How can I watch Netflix on my iPad 1?

I have never had the Netflix app on my iPad and it won't let me download the Netflix app as it requires IOS9 or above. I can't watch it on Safari either. Is there a solution other than binning my iPad 1? Thank you in advance.

Yes, I do. I have tried updating the IOS on my iPad 1 to 9 via iTunes but 5.1.1 is the highest it accepts.

You have no idea why I asked this question.

If you have iTunes on a computer you can download and install the latest iOS version of Netflix on your computer within iTunes.

Then, go back on your iPad 1, download the recent Netflix app from the iOS App Store and see if a pop-up window appears, that states an older version of this app exists for your device and would you like to download this now.

Tap OK.

An older version of Netflix should download to your iPad 1, IF Netflix developers left an older version of Netflix on Apple’s App servers.

Good Luck to You!

Do you mean I can exchange my iPad 1 for a newer version at any Apple store upon paying the given difference? Thanks for your help.

No. I mean that you willl have to purchase a new iPad. Apple does not have a trade-in policy. They do offer gift cards for recycling their devices, but the original iPad is going to be worth just about nothing at this point.

You can try what MichelPM suggested, but from what I remember reading not all that long ago, that doesn’t work any more. It is worth a try though and for your sake I hope it does work. If you do try this, after you download the app in iTunes, go to the Purchased section of the App Store on your iPad and try downloading it from there and see if you get the option to download the version that will work with your iPad.

Also be advised that if the app developers do not offer the older version anymore, there is no way to perform this work around. The older version of the app has to still be available by the developers.

First of all you and Michael are awesome many thanks for all your help. I will try the work around via iTunes despite all odds. It is nevertheless a shame as my iPad is still working perfectly and looks brand new despite being 7 or 8 years old. It cost me 800USD and this is what we call a rip-off in my country as it is only useful for viewing pictures and reading emails. If you have any connections with the high echelons at Apple please do let them know of how disappointed I am with the way they do business, it does not seem very ethical to me. Thanks again and best regards.

There maybe STILL older apps available to your 1st gen iPad.

You would still need to use the iTunes method to be able to get more apps onto your 1st gen iPad.

There maybe more “up to date”, third party web browsers you can still use that were still supported on iOS 5.1.1 for a much longer period of time nstead of that very old version of Safari.

You should STILL be able to read and send email, using the default iOS Mail app, on that iPad, OR once again try to find another third party mail app that has an older iOS 5.1.1 version still available.

FYI,

The 1st generation iPad was, more or less, an early adopter model iPad.

It was underpowered with only 256 MBs of RAM and NO cameras for image/video shooting or FaceTime calling.

One of the reasons Apple ONLY supported it for one year after its initial release.

If you want to find more useful apps for that 2010, 1st gen iPad,

Not every app you attempt to download will have an iOS 5.1.1 compatible version. For older apps that may still have an older iOS version available, the lowest compatible iOS version of an app is iOS 4.2.1.

The search for iOS 5.1.1 compatible apps will be trial and error, but they are out there.

This website may help you locate the apps you can use with your original iPad 1

My 2010, iPad 1 has well over 100 apps on it that are still functioning.

These were apps that I already had downloaded to my iPad 1 years,,ago.

Using the iTunes method and the website link above, you might be able to find older, still functioning apps for that 1st gen iPad.

These are older versions of apps that I currently run on my newer iPad models.

Good Luck!

If you need a more “recent” third party web browser for your 1st gen iPad, using the iTunes, the iOS App Store method outlined, try looking for these web browsers as these are ones I have or had my iPad 1.

Perfect Web Browser

Dolphin Web Browser

iCab

You maybe able to find older calculator apps for the iPad, since NO iPad ever came with a default calculator app.

There are some nice ones for iPad.

Not sure what YOU use that iPad for and if you would like it to do more at this point?

Might be able to find older versions of better alarm clock apps, notes apps, older news apps that may still work.

Dedicated weather apps maybe still available for the iPad 1

My older version of USA Today still works on my 2010, iPad.

Some older games and some productivity apps might be still available and might STILL be functional under iOS 5.1.1.

You might be able to get older notes style apps for your iPad 1

Older Note taking apps I have older versions of on my iPad 1

Notability

Notes pro

Noteshelf

Penultimate

WritePad

Sticky Desk

Things

Not knowing what you would really want to use that iPad for it is hard to recommend apps to you.

That'’s is why I supplied that Old Apps link to help guide you in your search for older iOS 5.1.1 compatible apps.

Also, while this website exists, I am not sure how up to date the listings within are.

So, once again, Good Luck!

Hey Michel,

I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes on my Asus laptop. Then I clicked on "Store" and all I can download/purchase are items related to Music/Films/Podcasts/Audiobooks. The dropdown menu on the right shows no such thing as apps, at least as far as I can see.

Does this mean I need to own an iMac or MacBook in order to get apps via iTunes? Or am I missing something in this incredible odyssey?

Thanks for your help.

I'll check that link.

Make sure you have completely uninstalled iTunes 12.7 from your PC.

I use a Mac and the Mac link is for iTunes 12.6.3.

The two others for PC should be for iTunes 12.6.3, as well.

If your PC is fairly recent try using the 64-bit version instead of the 32-bit version of iTunes 12.6.3 link.

I have no way to check a PC download.

Somewhere in the description it should tell you which version of iTunes you are downloading and installing, no?
