The job market is more competitive than ever, so after nailing an interview, the next step is writing a great thank you letter. Here are some do’s and don’ts to get you started.

DO

Do send a thank you letter as soon as possible after your interview.

The timing of your thank you letter is important. You want to show that you’re interested in the job, but you don’t want to seem desperate. Send your letter within 24 hours of your interview.

Do make your letter personal.

Your thank you letter is an opportunity to reinforce why you’re the best candidate for the job. Mention specific things that you discussed in the interview and how your skills and experience match the job requirements.

Do be sincere.

Your thank you letter is not the time to be funny or clever. Stick to the facts and express your sincere appreciation for the opportunity to interview.

Do proofread your letter.

Typos and grammar mistakes are a big turnoff for employers. Be sure to proofread your letter before you send it.

DON’T

Don’t be generic.

A generic thank you letter is a wasted opportunity. This is your chance to stand out from the other candidates. Be specific about why you’re the best person for the job.

Don’t be too long.

Your thank you letter should be concise. Get to the point and express your appreciation without going on and on.

Don’t forget to say thank you.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to say thank you in their thank you letters. Be sure to express your appreciation for the opportunity to interview and thank the interviewer for his or her time.

Don’t be negative.

Your thank you letter is not the time to complain about the interview process or the other candidates. Keep your letter positive and focused on why you’re the best person for the job.
